What to Expect in Your First Couples Counselling Session with a Mississauga Therapist
Booking your first session can feel like a big step. Maybe you and your partner have been arguing more than usual. Maybe things feel distant, even when you're in the same room. Or maybe you're just searching “couples therapy near me” late at night, not sure what you're even looking for yet.
Wherever you're starting from, it's normal to feel nervous about that first appointment. Many couples tell me they don't know what to say, worry about being judged, or aren't sure if counselling will even help. You're not alone in feeling that way, and reaching out is often the hardest part.
I'm Sherriden Brown, a Registered Psychotherapist and Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist at My Growth Counselling in Mississauga. I work with couples who want to feel closer, communicate better, and understand what's really going on beneath their conflict, especially when trust has been broken and you're working to rebuild trust together. My approach is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a compassionate, well-researched method for helping couples reconnect.
This guide walks you through exactly what happens during your first counselling in Mississauga, from the moment you book your free consultation to what we'll talk about once you're in the room. You'll learn how to prepare, what questions I typically ask, and why that first hour matters so much for the work we'll do together going forward.
In this guide, you'll learn what a first session with a Mississauga therapist actually looks like, from booking your free consultation to the questions you can expect. We'll cover how to find the right therapist for your relationship, what happens when you meet your registered psychotherapist for the first time, whether meeting in person or online works better for you, and what a non-judgmental space really means in practice, whether you're dealing with new relationship issues or years-old patterns. By the end, you'll feel more prepared and less anxious about taking this first step.
What Happens During Your First Couples Therapy Session in Mississauga
Your first session is mostly about getting to know each other. I'll ask about your relationship, how you met, and what's been feeling hard lately. This isn't a test, and there's nothing you need to prepare perfectly.
We'll also talk about what brought you in. Some couples come in because of one big issue, like a betrayal of trust. Others come in because the small arguments never seem to go away. Both are valid reasons to reach out, and neither means your relationship is broken beyond repair.
By the end of the first session, we'll have a general sense of your relationship's patterns and what you're both hoping to get out of working together, addressing new relationship issues or long-standing ones. You won't leave with all the answers, but you should leave feeling heard, and a little more hopeful than when you walked in.
Meeting Your Registered Psychotherapist for the First Time
I know meeting a new registered psychotherapist, especially together as a couple, can feel intimidating. As a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), I follow strict standards for ethical, evidence-based psychotherapy, so you can trust that the process is safe and professional from the very first hello.
My role in that first meeting isn't to take sides or assign blame. I'm there to understand both of your perspectives and help you see your relationship's dynamics more clearly. Many couples worry their therapist will side with one partner over the other. In my sessions, both of you are equally supported.
I'll also share a bit about my approach, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and answer any questions you have about how the therapeutic process works before we go further.
Will Our First Session Feel Like Marriage Counselling or Something Different?
Relationship therapy, marriage counselling, and this kind of work all describe a similar kind of support, though the language people use often depends on their relationship stage. Whether you're married, engaged, or have been together for years without a formal commitment, your first session will look much the same.
This is also different from family therapy, which usually includes children or other relatives. Here, our sessions focus specifically on your relationship as partners, strengthening communication and helping you resolve conflicts before they take root.
We'll focus on your relationship as it exists right now rather than any label attached to it. If you're feeling disconnected, misunderstood, or stuck in the same argument over and over, that's exactly the kind of pattern Emotionally Focused Therapy is built to address. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from a first session.
How to Get Matched with the Right Therapist for Your Relationship
Finding the right therapist matters just as much as starting the process in the first place. Every couple is different, and you deserve someone whose approach actually fits how you and your partner relate to each other.
Before your first visit, I offer a free consultation, 15 minutes, no pressure attached. This gives us both a chance to see if working together feels like the right fit before you commit to anything further. We'll talk briefly about what's going on in your relationship and what you're hoping this process will help with.
If you've worked with a therapist before and it didn't feel right, that doesn't mean therapy isn't for you,
finding the right fit is a normal part of the process, and it may simply mean you hadn't yet found the right approach for your relationship.
In-Person or Online Across Ontario: Choosing How You Meet
I offer both in-person sessions at my Mississauga office and virtual therapy available too, so you can choose whatever feels most comfortable and realistic for your schedule.
My Port Credit office offers a quiet, private space away from home distractions. Some couples find it easier to be fully present without the pull of a ringing phone or a child down the hall.
Online therapy, on the other hand, makes it possible to fit sessions into a busy week, especially if you or your partner travel often or live further out and prefer to meet from home. Your first session works the same way whether you're in the room with me or connecting through video.
What a Safe Space Really Means in Couples Counselling
You'll hear that phrase often when researching couples therapy in Mississauga, and it's not just a nice thing to say. In practice, it means your first session is structured so both of you can speak honestly without fear of being attacked or dismissed.
That might mean I gently redirect a conversation if it starts to feel like blame instead of understanding. It might mean slowing things down, without judgment, so one partner doesn't feel talked over. My goal is for both of you to feel like your side of the story matters equally.
Creating that kind of therapeutic space takes intention, and it starts in the very first session, not somewhere down the road once you've “earned” it.
Why Couples in Mississauga Choose Emotionally Focused Therapy Services
Many couples in Mississauga come to my therapy services after trying to work things out on their own for months or even years. Emotionally focused therapy is one of the most researched approaches to couples work, with most couples moving from distress toward recovery, and it focuses on the emotional needs underneath your arguments, not just the surface-level disagreement.
Rather than teaching communication skills alone, EFT helps you understand why certain conversations turn into fights in the first place. Once you can see the pattern, improving communication becomes much easier, together.
This is also why your first session focuses so heavily on listening rather than problem-solving. Understanding always comes before change, and that understanding is what helps couples rebuild trust and support their personal growth over time.
How a Psychotherapist Assesses Your Relationship in the First Visit
As your psychotherapist, part of my job in that first visit is gently assessing what's happening in your relationship, not to diagnose either of you, but to understand your unique relationship dynamics.
I'll ask about how you communicate during disagreements, what you each need from one another, and how your relationship has changed over time. These questions help me understand your emotional cycle as a couple, which is central to how emotionally focused therapy works.
This isn't about labeling one partner as the problem. Relationship struggles are almost always created together, which also means they can be changed together, with patience, emotional regulation, and the right support.
Starting Your Journey to Healing at a Mississauga Therapy Centre
Choosing to start this process is often one of the harder steps in a relationship's journey to healing and growth, and I don't take that decision lightly. Many people wait a long time before reaching out, often hoping things will improve on their own first.
At my Mississauga practice, a therapy centre built around emotionally focused therapy, that first session is really the beginning of a longer path toward healing your relationship. You won't fix everything in one hour, and you're not expected to.
What matters most in that first visit is simply showing up, together, and being willing to be honest about where things stand.
What Comes After Your First Session: Building Mental Health Care Together
After your first session, we'll talk about what ongoing support might look like for your specific relationship and mental health and well-being as a couple. Every couple moves through this at their own pace, and that pace often depends on what you're working through together, especially if infidelity or a longer history of hurt is part of the picture.
Rather than promising a fixed number of sessions, I focus on your progress along the way and check in regularly about how things feel. Mental health care works best when it's responsive to your relationship, not squeezed into a one-size-fits-all timeline.
Whatever pace is right for you, that first session is simply the first step, and you don't have to figure out the rest before you book it.
Will the therapist take sides during our first session?
No. My role is to support both of you equally, not to decide who's right. This process works best when both partners feel understood, not judged.
What if one of us is more nervous than the other?
That's completely normal. Many couples come in with one partner more hesitant than the other. We'll go at a pace that feels manageable for both of you.
Do we need individual therapy sessions too?
Not necessarily. Most of our work happens together, though occasionally a short individual conversation can help me understand each of your experiences more fully.
How long until we see progress?
Every relationship is different, so I can't promise a specific timeline. Many couples start noticing small shifts in how they communicate within the first few visits, especially once you start recognizing your patterns together.
What if my partner won't open up?
It's common for one partner to find it harder to share feelings at first. Part of my work is helping create a space where opening up starts to feel possible, even for the more guarded partner.
Can we meet by video instead of face to face?
Yes. I offer both in-person sessions in Mississauga and online sessions too, so you can choose whichever feels most comfortable for your first visit.
Your Next Step Toward a Stronger Relationship
Starting this process takes courage, and simply looking into what a first session involves is already a meaningful first step. Whether you're dealing with constant arguing, quiet distance, or something harder to put into words, you don't have to figure it all out before you walk through the door.
Your first couples therapy session with me will focus on understanding, not judgment. We'll talk about where things stand, what's been hard, and what you're both hoping for, at a pace that feels safe for both of you. From there, we can build a plan together that fits your relationship's dynamics, rather than a fixed template. Learn more about
