Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy in Mississauga
Individual therapy for adults who keep running into the same patterns with the people they love, or with themselves, with a Registered Psychotherapist trained in Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT).
When Anxiety and Old Patterns Follow You Into Every Relationship

Maybe you overthink every text, or you feel yourself pulling away the moment someone gets close. Maybe you keep ending up in the same kind of relationship, or you say yes to everyone and then feel resentful and alone.
Some people come to me after a breakup or a betrayal. Some come because their partner won't do couples counselling and they want to change what they can. Others have lived with anxiety or low mood for years and are tired of managing it on their own.
Underneath most of this are feelings you learned to push down or work around a long time ago, ways of coping that made sense then and cause trouble in the relationships you have now.
WORKING WITH ME
Individual Therapy From a Couples Therapist

I'm Sherriden Brown. I work with individuals and couples, so most weeks I see both sides of the same pattern, which helps when you're trying to understand someone who isn't in the room.
I've trained in Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy alongside the couples model I'm certified in. Sessions are in person in Port Credit or online anywhere in Ontario.
MY PROCESS
An Attachment-Based Approach to Your Emotions

EFIT is built on attachment science: the understanding that we're wired to need close, safe connection, and that a lot of our distress comes from how we protect ourselves when that connection feels out of reach.
In our sessions, we slow down the moments that trip you up, like a reaction that feels too big or a shutdown you can't explain, and find the feeling underneath. Then we work with that feeling directly, so you can respond to it differently and ask for what you need.
We go at your pace, and nothing gets forced.
What The Future Could look Like
Feeling More Secure in Yourself and Your Relationships

You notice the old reaction starting and have a choice about what to do next. You can tell someone you're hurt without attacking or disappearing. The anxiety is still there some days, but it doesn't run the show the way it used to.
Your relationships often shift too, even if the other person never comes to therapy, because when you respond differently, the people close to you usually do as well.

FAQs
Common Questions About EFIT

Questions people often ask before starting individual therapy.
What is emotionally focused individual therapy (EFIT)?
It's the individual form of Emotionally Focused Therapy, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson. It helps you understand and work with the emotions behind how you react, especially in close relationships.
Can EFIT help with anxiety and depression?
Yes. EFIT is used for anxiety, depression and trauma. I help you safely explore the painful emotions underneath them, in a way that lets you move forward.
Does EFIT work?
EFIT is newer than the couples model, and research on it is still growing. It's built on the same attachment principles as Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, which has a strong research base.
How is EFIT different from CBT?
CBT focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. EFIT works more directly with emotion, helping you get to the feelings underneath your reactions and use them to change how you relate to yourself and others.
Can I come on my own if my partner won't do couples counselling?
Yes, and it can make a real difference. We look at what happens between the two of you from your side, and what you can do differently. If your partner decides to come in later, couples counselling is an option.
Can I work through an affair on my own?
Yes. Whether you were the one who was hurt or the one who had the affair, individual sessions give you room to make sense of what happened and what you want next. If you both decide to work on the relationship, infidelity counselling is set up for that.
