The Days After an Affair Are Their Own Kind of Hard

My Growth Counselling / Therapy

You find yourself doing math at two in the morning. Dates, texts, a weekend away last spring that suddenly looks different than it did. You reread the same message for the twentieth time, looking for the thing you missed.

Maybe you're the one who was lied to, and your body hasn't caught up yet. You still get the kids to school and answer your emails, but it's in the back of your mind the whole time. Or maybe you're the one who crossed the line, you've apologized every way you know how, and none of it has landed. You watch someone you love flinch when your phone buzzes.

Some days you want to repair this. Some days you want to be done. Both show up in the same hour, and neither one feels like a decision. And you're not sure who you can even tell, because friends would pick a side and family would never let it go.

Most of the couples I see started right here.

WORKING WITH ME

Affair Recovery That Treats the Betrayal, Not Just the Arguing

My Growth Counselling / Therapy

I'm Sherriden Brown, and most of my work is with couples in the months after an affair comes to light. What I hear most often is that the usual advice about communicating better doesn't touch it, and they're right. An affair damages your ability to turn to your partner when you're hurt, at the exact time you need that most.

My work is built around Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Attachment Injury Resolution Model, a structured approach developed specifically for couples recovering from a betrayal like this one. Safety and connection are what an affair takes from you. They're also what we work to rebuild.

MY PROCESS

What Infidelity Counselling Actually Involves

My Growth Counselling / Therapy

Affair recovery moves in stages rather than a set number of sessions, because the pace depends on what you're both carrying into the room.

We start by steadying things enough that you can talk without it turning into the same fight. Then comes the conversation about what happened, told all the way through and heard, which is the part most couples have tried on their own and found they couldn't finish. After that, the slower work of deciding what you're building now, and whether you're building it together.

Some couples come in as a pair. Some people come on their own, because their partner isn't ready, or because the relationship has already ended and the hurt hasn't. Both are a reasonable place to start. I've also written more about what rebuilding trust after an affair involves, if you'd like to read before you reach out.

What Your Future Could look Like

What a Year From Now Could Feel Like

My Growth Counselling / Therapy

A year from now, your partner's phone might light up on the counter and you'll notice it, then go back to what you were doing. It just won't pull at you the way it does now.

You'll be able to say the hard thing out loud and have your partner actually hear it. The affair will be something you can both talk about without everything going quiet.

Some couples I work with end up closer than before, because they finally talked about things they'd avoided for years. Some decide to separate, and do it with more care than they expected. Either way, most people stop feeling stuck.

THE PRACTICAL DETAILS

My Growth Counselling / Therapy

When you're in the middle of this, the logistics shouldn't be one more thing to figure out. Here's what sessions cost, where we meet, and when I'm available.

Fees and Insurance

Sessions are $230 for 50 minutes. Most extended health plans cover a Registered Psychotherapist, and I bill your insurer directly.

In Person or Online

My office is on Lakeshore Road East in Port Credit, a short walk from the GO station. If it's easier to talk from home, online sessions are available anywhere in Ontario.

Session Times

Weekdays between 9 and 6, booked online, whether you're coming as a couple or on your own.

You Don't Have to Know What You Want Yet

Most people who reach out haven't decided anything. They just know they can't keep doing this on their own. You don't need to have the right words ready, and you don't need to agree with your partner about what happens next. The first conversation is fifteen minutes, it's free, and nothing is decided in it. You don't have to do this alone.

FAQs

Questions About Infidelity Counselling

My Growth Counselling / Therapy
  • What type of therapy is best for infidelity?

Approaches built for attachment and betrayal tend to fit this better than general communication work. My training is in Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Attachment Injury Resolution Model, which was developed specifically for couples recovering from a betrayal. The difference is that it treats the affair as an injury to the bond rather than a problem to argue about more effectively. That matters, because most couples have already tried talking it through and found it went nowhere.

  • Can a relationship go back to normal after cheating?

Most couples who come through this don't describe it as going back. They describe something different than what they had. Some find it's more open than the relationship that existed before the affair, because things got said that had been avoided for years. Others decide the relationship has run its course. I can't tell you which one you'll land on, and I wouldn't trust anyone who said they could.

  • What if my partner won't come to counselling?

That's common, and it isn't the end of the conversation. Plenty of people start infidelity counselling on their own while their partner stays on the fence. Sometimes the other person joins later, once they've seen it isn't a trial. Sometimes they don't, and the individual work still matters, because you're the one carrying this either way.

  • How do I know when to walk away after infidelity?

There's no test for this, and anyone selling you one is guessing. What I can say is that the decision tends to get clearer once you're not making it inside the first wave of shock. Part of the work is getting you steady enough that the choice comes from what you want, rather than from fear or exhaustion.

  • Does this apply to an emotional affair?

Yes, and often the hurt is harder to explain to other people, which makes it lonelier. Rebuilding trust after an emotional affair involves the same injury as a physical one: someone else became the person your partner turned to. The work doesn't change based on what did or didn't happen physically.

  • How much does infidelity counselling cost in Mississauga?

Sessions are $230 for 50 minutes, in person at my office on Lakeshore Road East in Port Credit or online across Ontario. The first 15-minute consultation is free, and it's just a conversation to see whether this feels like the right fit. Many extended health plans cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist, so it's worth checking yours.
