When you have a baby, the world changes. Whether it is your first child or you are already a mom, new babies mean new transitions. But when something does not just feel right, or you are feeling overwhelmed, it is normal to feel like a part of you has disappeared. But when the hopeless thoughts become overwhelming, you may ask yourself: Do I have postpartum depression?

But what is postpartum depression? What are the signs? Which postpartum depression treatments actually work? Keep reading to find out.

           What is Postpartum Depression?

Let’s start with the question that matters most: what is postpartum depression?

Biologically, postpartum depression is often triggered by the sudden, dramatic drop in estrogen and progesterone after childbirth. It can cause chemical changes in the brain that affect mood regulation.

It is not just a rough adjustment period. It is a deeper emotional experience that can affect how you think, feel, and move through your day after having a baby. For some, it feels like constant overwhelm, for others disconnection, or like pressure.

Understanding postpartum depression means recognizing that it is not a personal weakness. It is a human response to a major life shift; one that affects your body, hormones, identity, relationships, and your emotional world all at once.

            Signs of Postpartum Depression

Every woman experiences postpartum depression in a different way. But there are some common signs to look out for:

            Extreme emotional overwhelm

            Struggle to enjoy meaningful moments

Feeling a disconnect from your baby, your partner, or yourself

            Heavy, critical thoughts

            Extreme exhaustion and fatigue

            Constantly questioning yourself

If you are noticing these patterns, it doesn’t automatically define your experience, but it does mean it is worth paying attention to.

           Postpartum Depression Treatments

When it comes to postpartum depression treatments, there is no one single, correct approach. Healing is personal and layered. However, therapy, like Emotionally Focused Therapy, creates a space where you can begin to understand what you are feeling instead of pushing it aside.

It helps you make sense of the emotional weight you may be carrying, reconnect with yourself, and rebuild a sense of stability from the inside out.

Online Therapy VS In-Person Therapy

If you are considering therapy, either for yourself or as a couple, there is an important decision early-on that needs to be made. Do you want to do therapy online or in person? It may seem like a simple question with a simple answer, but the reality is that when you consider your relationship, emotions, and healing, the decision can be quite heavy.

So what is right for you?

Would you benefit best from the help of a certified online therapist? Or is in-person therapy the right choice for you?

Keep reading as we delve into both so you can make the best decision for your unique situation.

            Why Online Therapy?

Working with a certified online therapist often fits more naturally into the rhythm of modern life. It allows you to show up as you are, without the added layers of travel, scheduling stress, or rushing from one commitment to another. For many couples and individuals, online sessions feel:

            More accessible and flexible

            Easier to maintain consistency

Emotionally safe in a familiar space

In relationship therapy, this can be especially helpful. Some couples find it easier to have difficult conversations when they are not physically sitting in the same office space.

            Why In-Person Therapy?

There is something powerful about physically entering a space that is dedicated entirely to your growth. In-person therapy creates a clear boundary between everyday life and the work you are doing in your sessions. For some people, that shift alone can feel grounding. Here is what many people like about meeting for in-person therapy:

            A dedicated, distraction-free environment

Being fully present without interruptions from daily life

The subtle, human experience of sharing space with another person

The room itself becomes part of the process. It is a place where you can step away from everything else and focus fully on what matters most.

           Getting Started

When it comes down to it, therapy works because of the relationship you build with your therapist, not because of where you sit during the session.

Whether you are meeting with a certified online therapist from your living room or walking into a quiet office for in-person therapy, what matters most is feeling safe, understood, and supported.

A Path to Healing and Rebuilding: Coming Back After Infidelity

Infidelity changes a relationship. That is just a fact. But it does not have to define a relationship forever.

With the right support, the right infidelity therapy strategy, and a willingness to face the truth together, many couples rediscover the things that they lost; like connection, understanding, and a way forward.

For many couples, marriage counselling after infidelity becomes the first step toward rebuilding an honest and secure partnership. It takes work, but healing and rebuilding is possible when both partners are committed to making things work.

The Attachment Injury Resolution Model (AIRM) Infidelity Therapy Strategy

An attachment injury occurs when one partner experiences a moment of deep emotional hurt in the relationship; especially at a time when they needed support, care, or reassurance the most. Instead of feeling protected or valued, they are left feeling alone, rejected, or betrayed.

These moments do not just fade with time. They often stay present in the relationship.

The Attachment Injury Resolution Model offers a clear, step-by-step infidelity therapy strategy designed to help couples move through the pain of betrayal in a way that leads to real healing.

In marriage counselling after infidelity, this process focuses on helping both partners safely revisit what happened, but in a way that creates understanding instead of further harm. Here is what AIRM looks like in marriage counselling after infidelity:

            Making Space for the Pain

            Understanding the Impact

What Healing Can Look Like With the Right Help

Not all approaches to marriage counselling after infidelity go deep enough to address the emotional impact of betrayal. Some focus only on communication or problem-solving. But without healing the underlying injury, those surface-level changes often do not last.

That is why using an attachment-based infidelity therapy strategy like AIRM can be so powerful. It focuses on what truly drives connection between partners.

All relationships require hard work and dedication. But sometimes you need a little outside help. And there is absolutely no shame in that.

Here’s the truth, one that many couples don’t hear often enough: in most cases, couples therapy is effective. We know more about love and attachment than we did even 15 years ago. In fact, many couples who seek couples counselling in Mississauga, Ontario, and the surrounding areas, are not on the brink of separation at all. Many are simply looking to understand each other better and strengthen their connection.

Almost every couple can gain something meaningful when they seek couples therapy in Mississauga, like developing healthier communication habits or gaining more confidence to navigate life challenges together.

When it really comes down to it, couples counselling in Mississauga, Ontario is less of a fix as it is an investment.

If you still are not sure if couples counselling is the right choice for you and your partner, here are some of the scenarios where therapy can be especially impactful:

           During Times of Crisis

When something big hits your life, you may find you and your partner reacting quickly, saying things you don’t mean, or pulling away just to cope. Couples therapy in Mississauga offers a place to slow all of that down. It gives you both a steady, supportive space to breathe, process what is happening, and begin to understand each other again.

           If Couples Want to Recommit

Not every relationship ends because of a dramatic event. Sometimes, couples simply drift. If you and your partner feel like you’ve lost that sense of us, couples counselling in Mississauga, Ontario can help you reconnect with what brought you together in the first place.

           When Life Changes Occur

Life keeps moving, and with it comes change like getting a new job, new homes, becoming parents, shifting responsibilities, or unexpected transitions. Even positive changes can bring stress, and sometimes it can feel like you and your partner are trying to adjust at different speeds. Through couples therapy in Mississauga, you are given the space to navigate those changes together.

If You Are Dealing With Anger or Betrayal

Emotions like anger, hurt, or betrayal can create deep divides if they are left unaddressed.

Through couples counselling in Mississauga, Ontario, these emotions can be explored safely and constructively. Instead of being stuck in cycles of blame or withdrawal, couples are given the tools to process what happened and begin rebuilding trust.

At My Growth Counselling, couples therapy in Mississauga is guided by Sherriden Brown, a Registered Psychotherapist, Canadian Certified Counsellor, and Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist.

Her approach is grounded in helping couples understand the deeper emotional patterns that shape their relationship. Rather than focusing only on surface-level issues, she works with you to uncover what is driving those patterns; so real, lasting change can happen.

What Does Couples Counselling Involve?

If things feel off in your relationship, maybe you have been fighting a lot lately or maybe not at all, the question of couples therapy for Mississauga, Ontario couples often comes up. But even now, there is still stigma surrounding couples counselling in Mississauga, Ontario, and the surrounding areas.

This stigma comes from not truly understanding what the process actually is. For many people, couples counselling in Mississauga, Ontario is misunderstood as a last resort, something only meant for relationships that are failing, or a place where blame is assigned and problems are picked apart.

In reality, couples therapy for Mississauga, Ontario, and couples in the surrounding areas, is something very different.

It has nothing to do with determining who is right or wrong. It is all about understanding. Couples counselling is all about creating a space where both partners can slow down, feel heard, and begin to make sense of what is happening beneath the surface.

What Happens in Couples Therapy in Mississauga, Ontario?

Rather than focusing only on surface-level behavior, couples therapy explores what is happening on the inside of your relationship and each individual. It focuses on your emotional responses, past experiences, and the way those shape your current relationship. Here is what happens when you engage in couples therapy in Mississauga, Ontario:

You Find A Space Where Both Voices Matter

You and your partner are both given the time and support to express what you are feeling honestly, without interruption. Often, this is the first time in a long time that both partners feel truly heard.

You Get to Explore the Why Behind the Conflicts

Arguments are rarely just about what they seem. In couples therapy in Mississauga, Ontario, couples have a chance to look deeper at their emotions, fears, and unmet needs driving those moments.

You Begin to Understanding Your Emotional Patterns

When you start going to couples therapy, you begin to notice how certain situations trigger predictable reactions. These patterns do not define you or your relationship, but understanding them can change everything.

You Learn How to Respond, Not Just React

Instead of getting caught in the same cycles, you will start to develop new ways of responding to each other; ways that invite connection rather than create distance.

You Start to Rebuild Emotional Safety

For many couples, the goal is not just better communication, it is also about feeling safe again. Safe to be vulnerable. Safe to be honest. Safe to be close.

Six Signs You & Your Partner Will Benefit from Couples Therapy

Every couple and every relationship has its hard times. But when these hard times are frequent, and getting over past hurts and hangups seems like an impossible hurdle, marriage counselling may be the smartest next step.

But, if you are not sure if seeking a marriage therapist for couples counselling is right for your relationship, check out these signs that your relationship needs counselling:

Arguments Are Frequent and Escalating

Any married couple can tell you that disagreements are natural. But if you and your partner are arguing more often, or conversations quickly turn into conflicts, it may indicate deeper communication issues. Couples counselling can provide tools to manage conflict constructively.

Your Relationship Lacks Intimacy

A decline in emotional or physical intimacy is often a strong sign a marriage needs counselling and that a connection has weakened. Marriage counselling can help partners rediscover closeness and rebuild their shared emotional bond.

Infidelity or Lack of Trust Exists

Experiencing betrayal, whether emotional or physical, can leave lasting wounds that impact your marriage for the long-term. Working with a marriage therapist gives couples a safe space to explore these hurts and begin the long journey of restoring trust.

A Major Life Change Has Occurred

Events like moving, career changes, or becoming parents can put strain on any relationship. Couples counselling helps you and your partner navigate these life transitions together while maintaining emotional support.

Built-Up Resentment Haunts Your Marriage

When small issues accumulate without resolve, resentment can grow and erode your connection. Marriage counselling offers strategies to address past hurts and rebuild mutual understanding.

Financial Issues Are Causing Tension

Money challenges are one of the leading causes of relationship stress. That is why financial issues are a top sign that a marriage needs counselling. A marriage therapist can help you and your spouse communicate about finances, reduce conflict, and work toward shared goals.

If any of these signs resonate, seeking couples counselling is a huge step toward nurturing your partnership! It is not always easy to take the first step, but it can have a profound impact on your relationship now and in the future!

What to Expect from Attachment-Based Therapy

Our past shapes our future and it molds our relationships. Patterns from the past, sometimes even childhood experiences, can create tension and misunderstandings. These can build up, and suddenly, the need for couples therapy is staring you in the face.

First, it is important to acknowledge that the fact that you are searching for couples therapy solutions is already a brave step toward strengthening your bond!

Among the many couples therapy approaches, attachment-based therapy for couples stands out because it addresses not just the surface-level conflicts, but the underlying emotional patterns that shape how you relate to each other.

There is no doubt that attachment-based therapy can lead to powerful transformations for couples. But the real question is, what do attachment-based therapy techniques entail? Here are the most common attachment-based therapy techniques that you will see during relationship therapy sessions:

Identifying Patterns That Impact Your Relationship

The first step in attachment-based therapy for couples is meeting with a trained therapist to explore the patterns in your relationship. A therapist works with both partners to uncover repeated dynamics that may be rooted in early attachment experiences.

By understanding these patterns, you gain clarity on why certain disagreements escalate or why emotional connection feels challenging. This step in couples therapy is about self-discovery and empathy, and is an essential foundation for the rest of your therapy sessions.

Developing Secure Attachments in Your Current Relationship

Once patterns are identified, the focus of relationship therapy shifts to building secure attachments between partners. Your therapist will guide you to cultivate safety, trust, and emotional responsiveness. Couples learn to communicate openly, respond to vulnerability with care, and reinforce each other’s emotional needs.

It is important to remember that secure attachments do not form overnight, and it is a gradual process.

Diving Deeper into Attachment Experiences with Therapy Techniques

A key part of attachment-based therapy for couples is exploring deeper emotional experiences using specific attachment-based therapy techniques. Sessions often include:

Mindfulness exercises to increase awareness of emotions in the present moment and reduce reactive patterns.

Body awareness practices to notice how stress or emotional tension manifests physically, allowing partners to respond more thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

Emotion exercises that help couples identify, express, and regulate their feelings in a safe environment, strengthening empathy and understanding.

These attachment-based therapy techniques help partners connect with their inner emotional world and bring that awareness into the relationship.

5 Benefits of Attachment-Based Therapy

At some point or another, you have probably felt frustrated in your relationship. That is just a reality of being in a partnership with someone else. However, when you and your partner are unable to connect or caught in the same arguments, the idea of couples therapy may arise.

When it does, you have many relationship therapy options to choose from. Among the most effective forms of couples therapy is attachment-based therapy for couples. This form of relationship therapy helps couples explore the ways early life experiences may be influencing adult relationships.

Based on the idea that the bonds we form in childhood shape how we connect and trust as adults, attachment-based therapy for couples helps partners uncover the emotional patterns that may be driving conflict or distance.

Curious to see if it is worth it? You and your partner can both benefit from attachment-based therapy, and here is how:

Learning How to Meet Your Partner’s Needs

One of the greatest challenges in relationships is understanding what your partner truly needs. Attachment-based therapy for couples can guide partners to recognize and respond to each other’s emotional cues with empathy and care. In couples therapy, this skill allows partners to support one another effectively, reduce misunderstandings, and create a sense of being genuinely seen and understood.

Learning How to Meet Your Own Needs

Equally important is learning to honor and communicate your own emotional needs. Relationship therapy through an attachment-based approach encourages self-reflection and self-compassion, helping each partner understand what makes them feel safe, loved, and secure.

Emotional Regulation

Many couples find themselves stuck in patterns of reactive anger, withdrawal, or anxiety. Attachment-based therapy teaches tools for emotional regulation, helping partners manage their feelings in constructive ways rather than letting emotions drive conflict.

A Deeper Sense of Safety and Confidence in Relationships

Couples therapy rooted in attachment principles helps couples build that safety. Partners can learn to communicate openly, support each other during difficult moments, and develop confidence in their bond. This is perhaps one of the most powerful benefits of attachment-based therapy.

Greater Self-Esteem and Self-Awareness

Finally, attachment-based therapy for couples fosters growth on an individual level. As you explore your emotional patterns, identify unmet needs, and witness positive change in your relationship, your self-awareness and self-esteem can naturally increase!

So who benefits from attachment-based therapy? Both you and your partner!

If you are seeking a meaningful path to rebuild trust, connection, and intimacy, attachment-based therapy for couples could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Many couples reach a point where love and commitment feel overshadowed by old patterns and emotional blockages. While emotionally draining, recognizing these obstacles is the first step towards healing, and it is a sign that your relationship matters.

When you reach this point, attachment-based therapy can make a profound difference. But many couples wonder, “What is attachment-based therapy?’, and wonder how attachment-based therapy works.

Read on as we delve into the world of attachment-based therapy for couples and how relationship therapy can be the lifeline you and your partner have been searching for.

           Understanding Attachment-Based Therapy

           So, what is attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy for couples focuses on the ways our early life experiences shape how we connect with others as adults. Our relationships as children, particularly with primary caregivers, create a blueprint for how we experience love. When these early attachments are inconsistent, or even absent, it can result in insecurities and struggles in adult relationships.

Attachment-based therapy is a form of couples therapy that can help you and your partner uncover hidden patterns and understand how childhood experiences may be influencing present-day conflicts.

Many people come to relationship therapy feeling frustrated and not realizing that their partner’s reactions, or their own, may be tied to old attachment wounds; which is why attachment-based therapy for couples can be so powerful in restoring relationships.

           How Attachment-Based Therapy Works

In couples therapy, attachment-based approaches work by creating a safe and empathetic environment where both partners can explore their emotions without judgment. Your therapist will help identify patterns of interaction that trigger:

Conflict

            Distance

            Disconnection.

Through guided conversations and exercises, this type of relationship therapy teaches you and your partner how to recognize emotional needs and respond to each other in ways that foster safety and trust.

Unlike surface-level advice or conflict-resolution tips, attachment-based therapy for couples dives into the underlying emotional dynamics. It helps each partner see how fears of rejection, abandonment, or inadequacy, often stemming from childhood, can create defensive behaviors in their relationship.

By understanding these dynamics, couples gain tools to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively, paving the way for more secure, supportive connections.

           Taking the First Step Today

If you and your partner are searching for answers or hoping to address childhood patterns in a meaningful way, consider attachment-based therapy. Your concerns are valid, and seeking help is a courageous act of love.

           emotional distance over time

. Many couples find themselves trapped in routines where communication dwindles, intimacy fades, and unresolved conflicts linger unaddressed. You might feel as though you are living parallel lives, coexisting but failing to connect. This experience can be painful and disheartening, but acknowledging it is the first step toward healing.

           Facilitating Deep Connection

In a silent divorce, communication often breaks down, leading to disconnection and misunderstanding. Couples Therapy creates a safe environment where partners can express their thoughts and emotions. With the guidance of a skilled therapist, you can share your vulnerabilities and listen to your partner's perspective, fostering a dialogue that can break the silence and rebuild trust.

Silent divorces often involve negative interaction cycles that perpetuate emotional distance. EFT helps couples identify these unhelpful patterns, such as avoidance or criticism, and understand how they contribute to each partner's feelings of isolation. By acknowledging these dynamics, you can begin to shift how you see one another and create a more supportive and loving interaction with each other.

A key aspect of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is establishing an emotionally safe space for both partners. This is vital for those experiencing a silent divorce, where feelings of rejection or hurt may have made open communication difficult. Through Couples Therapy, you learn to respond to each other with empathy and compassion, fostering an environment where both partners feel validated and understood.

           Rebuilding Emotional Bonds

Couples Counselling encourages couples to reconnect with the emotional bond that may have diminished over time. By becoming more attuned to each other's emotional needs, partners can create deeper intimacy and fulfillment in their relationship. This rekindling of connection can bring you close, creating a sense of hope and renewal.

Couples Counselling isn't just about addressing issues in the present; it equips couples with strategies to maintain emotional intimacy for the long term. You’ll gain insights into your triggers and learn how to respond to each others needs, reducing the likelihood of reverting to past patterns of disengagement. This foundation of understanding fosters a sustainable connection that enhances your relationship moving forward.

If you’re navigating the challenges of a silent divorce, it’s essential to recognize that you are not alone, and there are paths to healing. Emotionally Focused Therapy can guide you through the complexities of emotional detachment, helping you rebuild the bonds that are vital to a fulfilling relationship. By enhancing communication, identifying harmful patterns, creating emotional safety, and focusing on reconnection, EFT offers a compassionate framework for rediscovering love and intimacy. Taking this step can lead you and your partner toward a renewed understanding and a stronger, more resilient partnership—one filled with hope and healing.

Just like a car that needs regular maintenance to run smoothly, romantic relationships require ongoing attention and care. When problems arise, it’s crucial to address them promptly to prevent further issues.

Sometimes, we can handle relationship maintenance on our own, but there are moments when professional help is the best option. Couples counselling, with a licensed professional, is focused on enhancing relationship satisfaction and improving the way couples handle conflicts. This can be done through both in-person and online sessions, aiming to foster a healthier relationship and resolve any underlying issues.

           What is Couples Therapy?

Simply put, Couples therapy is a type of psychotherapy, or talk therapy, with a trained therapist.

You can strengthen your relationship with couples therapy that you can attend together or individually, whenever it fits your schedule.

During sessions, partners gain a deeper understanding of their relationship, work through conflicts, and learn new ways to improve their satisfaction with the help of Emotionally Focused Therapy. These usually focus on specific challenges like intimacy issues or jealousy and involve active participation from both partners. The approach is focused on emotions. We work on targeting emotional isolation because we are wired for connection, helping to restore your emotional bond.

Is couples therapy worth the effort? Absolutely. Research by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy shows that 97% of surveyed couples felt they received the help they needed from therapy, and 93% reported gaining more effective tools for managing conflicts.

The journey isn't always straightforward and requires commitment from both sides. Yet, the outcomes can be deeply rewarding. Many couples see a marked improvement in their understanding of and connection with each other, forming the basis for a refreshed and stronger relationship.

Understanding the Role of Relationship Therapy in Rebuilding Connections

Relationship therapy is much more than just sitting and talking about your problems. It's about building a new level of understanding with your partner, which can really refresh the connection and closeness you feel with each other.

In my sessions, I often meet couples who are stuck in a loop, arguing about the same things over and over. It’s exhausting, isn’t it? You might find that you're not being heard, or that every disagreement just leads to a standoff. That’s where relationship therapy can help—it gives you both a chance to break out of those cycles.

We’ll dig into the deeper issues behind these arguments. Sometimes, what seems like a small problem on the surface is actually tied to deeper emotional needs or past injuries that haven’t been addressed. By shedding light on these, we can begin to work through them together.

A big part of relationship therapy is learning how to communicate in ways that really reach your partner. It’s not just about talking more or even talking better—it’s about making sure you’re truly understood and that you understand your partner too. We’ll also work on listening in a way that makes your partner feel genuinely heard. These skills are crucial because they help transform your daily interactions from conflict to genuine conversation.

Empathy is another key focus in our therapy sessions. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in our own feelings that we forget our partner is struggling too. I’ll help you see each other's perspectives, which can soften the tensions and lead to more caring interactions. This helps rebuild the emotional connection that might have started to weaken.

By tackling these strategies, you and your partner can gradually find your way back to a place where your relationship feels more secure, supportive, and loving. The aim here isn’t just to patch things up for now but to make lasting changes that allow both of you to grow together in a healthy way.

How Marriage Counselling Can Transform Your Relationship

Marriage counselling is more than just getting through tough times; it's about growing together and deepening your connection. Let's look at how this works.

In our sessions, we'll focus on the patterns that cause you to feel distant or disconnected. Every couple has these patterns, and they can lead to misunderstandings or conflicts. For instance, if one of you tends to withdraw under stress while the other seeks more engagement, it can lead to a cycle of stress and retreat. We'll work on understanding these dynamics and changing how you both respond to stress.

We'll also talk about your hopes for the future. Often, couples are so caught up in current problems or past issues that they don't focus on what they really want moving forward. Together, we'll define what a fulfilling relationship looks like for you both and maybe set some new goals.

Understanding each other's backgrounds is another key part. Knowing where you're both coming from helps explain why certain things can trigger strong reactions. This understanding is vital for building patience and forgiveness as you each work through personal challenges within your relationship.

Finally, we'll work on rebuilding trust and commitment. This is crucial, especially if your trust has been damaged by things like infidelity or communication breakdowns. Rebuilding trust requires consistent effort and genuine commitment from both of you, guided by strategies we develop in our sessions.

By focusing on these areas, marriage counselling can truly transform your relationship, making it not just sustainable but also fulfilling and joyful.

Conflict Resolution Strategies That Promote Understanding

Handling conflicts well is crucial in any relationship. It's about managing disagreements so they don't hurt your connection with each other. In our sessions, we focus on several strategies to resolve conflicts while building understanding and closeness between you.

We also dig deep to find the real roots of your conflicts. Often, the things you argue about on the surface aren't the true issues. For instance, a disagreement about chores might really be about feeling unappreciated. By understanding these deeper problems, you can address the real concerns and move beyond just treating the symptoms.

We also work on sharing vulnerabilities during these tough moments. When you open up about your fears or insecurities, it shifts the interaction from you against each other to you both against the problem. This can transform conflicts into moments of connection and understanding.

By using these strategies, you can change the way you handle disagreements, leading to fewer arguments and a stronger, healthier relationship. These tools not only help with current issues but also prepare you to face future challenges together.

The Benefits of Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a special kind of therapy that focuses on strengthening the emotional bonds between partners. It's really about getting to the heart of what makes your relationship tick and fixing issues right from the core. Here's how EFT can help you and your partner find more harmony and connection:

           Building a Secure Connection:

EFT teaches you how to create or rebuild a strong emotional bond. It offers a safe space for both of you to share your deepest feelings. This helps build trust and strengthens your connection, which is really important for a lasting relationship.

            Breaking Negative Cycles:

Sometimes, without realizing it, couples get stuck in patterns where one person's actions trigger a negative reaction from the other. EFT helps you see these patterns and understand the feelings behind them, so you can start having more positive and supportive interactions.

Improving How You Respond to Each Other:

A big goal of EFT is to help you both respond better to each other's emotional needs. It's about making sure you can express what you need in a way that your partner really gets it, which is key for a close and satisfying relationship.

           Healing Old Wounds:

EFT is great for helping you both heal from past hurts that might still be affecting your relationship today. By dealing with these old wounds in therapy, you can move forward without them weighing you down.

           Enhancing Communication:

Through EFT, you'll learn better ways to talk about your feelings and thoughts, which can make your relationship stronger and prevent misunderstandings.

            Building Resilience for the Future:

By improving your emotional understanding and communication, EFT prepares you to face future challenges together. This resilience comes from successfully handling tough emotional issues during your therapy sessions.

EFT lays the groundwork for long-term health and happiness in your relationship by focusing on your emotional connection. This approach helps you both feel more secure and understood by each other.
Setting Relationship Goals in Counselling for Couples

In couples counselling, setting clear goals is key to making real progress. Think of it like setting a destination for a road trip. When you both know where you’re headed, it's easier to stay on track and see how far you've come. Here’s how we can use goal setting to guide our work together:

           Understanding What You Want:

At the start, it’s important for you both to share what you hope to achieve through counselling. Maybe you want to communicate better, trust each other more, or feel closer. Knowing these goals helps keep our sessions focused and moving forward.

           Setting Immediate and Future Goals:

It helps to have goals for both the short term and the long term. Short-term goals give you quick results, which can really boost your morale. Long-term goals help you look ahead to the future you’re building together. For instance, if improving communication is your goal, a short-term step might be practicing listening skills for a few minutes each day.

           Breaking It Down:

We’ll break each goal into smaller, manageable steps. This makes even big challenges seem more doable and keeps you both motivated.

           Checking In:

Goals aren’t set in stone. We’ll revisit them regularly to see how you’re doing and tweak them if needed. This keeps our therapy flexible and responsive to your needs.

Discovering that your partner has been unfaithful is devastating. You might feel like your world is falling apart, the trust you built over the months and years has been broken in an instant. Whether it’s a physical affair or an emotional one, the pain feels just as real, just as deep. You’re not alone in feeling this way, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed by the range of emotions that flood in—shock, sadness, anger, confusion.

, and I've worked with many couples right here in Mississauga who have faced this challenging situation. In my practice, we use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to understand not just the immediate pain of infidelity, but also to dig deeper into the emotional gaps that may have led to it. EFT helps us explore these feelings together in a safe, supportive environment.

The path to recovery isn’t about fixing what was broken overnight, it's about understanding each other more deeply than before and rebuilding trust step by step. The goal here isn’t just to "get over" the affair, but to find out why it happened, and how to strengthen your relationship against future strains.

This can lead to a stronger, more stable relationship where both partners feel heard and valued. Remember, while the discovery of an affair is a crisis, it can also be an opportunity to address underlying issues, enhance emotional connections, and start anew with a stronger foundation. Through EFT, I help couples navigate this emotional time, empowering you both to emerge more connected and resilient.

affair can be just as painful. This happens when one partner forms a close emotional bond with someone else outside the relationship. It might start off as just a friendship, but as it deepens, it can leave the other partner feeling abandoned and betrayed.

In our sessions, we dig into how emotional affairs can shake the trust you have in each other. It’s not necessarily about physical actions but about feeling emotionally replaced. You might catch yourself wondering, “Aren’t I enough?” or “What do they have that I don’t?” These are completely normal questions to ask and they really strike at the heart of why infidelity hurts so much.

As well as helping the injured partner express their pain in a way that their partner can hold, we create a safe space to figure out why emotional needs weren’t being met, which which helps ensure it won't happen again. Maybe it’s about not feeling appreciated, feeling undervalued, or not feeling heard in your relationship. EFT helps us shine a light on these issues. By recognizing and talking about these needs, we start the healing process. We look for ways to reconnect emotionally and strengthen the bonds that make a relationship work.

Working through an emotional affair is a journey that you both need to commit to. It involves having open and honest discussions about both your feelings and addressing your hurt. Our goal with this therapy is to rebuild the trust that’s been lost and to find new, healthier ways to meet each other’s emotional needs. We want to work on building a relationship where both of you feel secure, valued, and deeply connected, not just get past the affair.

           First Steps Toward Recovery

Finding out about an affair can really rock your relationship. The initial reactions—whether it’s shock, deep sadness, or anger—are completely normal. It’s what most people feel when faced with such painful news.

In Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the first step after an affair comes to light is to make sure both of you have a safe space. This is a place where you can both talk openly and without judgment about everything that’s happened.

During our sessions, I’ll help you to understand how deeply this has impacted both of you. We’re not trying to excuse what happened, but to get a clearer understanding of it. Were there needs that weren’t being met? Did communication break down somewhere? Exploring these questions helps us see where your relationship might be vulnerable. It’s a time for you to voice your pain and feelings, and to explore the root causes.

Most of the time, this is what you have been trying to tell each other for a long time and It’s really important for both of you to feel seen, heard and understood.

This initial phase of therapy can be really tough, but it’s crucial for healing. It helps lay the groundwork for rebuilding trust and recommitting to each other. With EFT, we try to turn this crisis into a turning point. If both of you are committed to working on the relationship, you can build a new, stronger, and more honest foundation moving forward.

Working through infidelity is about more than just dealing with the initial shock and hurt; it's really about rebuilding and strengthening your relationship. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is crucial in this process because it helps both of you understand not just what happened, but why it happened. Understanding this is key to feeling empathy, rebuilding trust, and eventually forgiving each other.

In our sessions, we dig into the emotions behind the affair. We look at what needs might have been missing in the relationship that led one partner to look elsewhere. Often, we find that feelings like loneliness, feeling unappreciated, or needing more closeness come up. We see these feelings not as mistakes or failures, but as innate human needs that weren't being met in your relationship. Recognizing this helps us move away from blaming and toward understanding and caring for each other more. I'll help you to turn to each other in a way that draws the other close. This shift is really important for healing because it helps you both see each other with more kindness.

Turning towards each other in a soft way is a big part of healing from infidelity, and it can be the hardest part. It means the person who was hurt works through their pain, and the person who breached their partner's trust shows they're truly committed to the relationship. Learning to turn towards each other is a powerful step. It's a chance to grow closer and make your bond stronger, even after something as tough as an affair.

EFT doesn't just help you get through infidelity, it helps your relationship come out stronger and more connected than before. By rebuilding trust and deepening your understanding of each other's needs and worries, many couples find they're even stronger together than they were before.

Healing after such a deep betrayal is tough for many couples, but with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), it's possible. EFT helps us tackle the emotional barriers that have built up and works to break these down, bringing you both closer together again.

We first begin by facing the pain and mistrust the affair has brought into your relationship. It's important for both of you to recognize these feelings and understand how they affect each of you and your relationship. Getting to this understanding is crucial because it fosters empathy, a key ingredient needed to rebuild intimacy.

Next, we look at how each of you reacts to emotional hurt. In an attempt to not make things worse, some might pull away, others might act as if nothing is wrong, or in an attempt to get things to change or to be heard, some might get angry. Understanding these patterns is vital because they can block closeness. During our sessions, with my guidance, we will explore and express the underlying attachment fears or needs that are often masked by those more reactive actions.

Building trust again is a gradual process. I'll help both of you to consistently become emotionally accessible, responsive, and tuned in to your partner.

Remember when you first met? you were drawn to each other's unique qualities and interests. Over time, it's easy to lose sight of those things. But, through the process of Emotionally Focused Therapy, you can reignite that spark and build a stronger connection.

When you face infidelity, it’s not just about ending the affair. It’s about starting fresh and building a stronger relationship than you had before. In our work together with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we go beyond just fixing what was broken. We look to deepen the connection and trust between you and your partner.

We uncover the deeper reasons behind these actions. This helps both of you understand and hod space for each other’s perspective and grow a new kind of understanding. It’s about walking in each other’s shoes and really getting why things went the way they did. This is how trust starts to rebuild.

Healing is a journey that takes time and effort from both of you. It’s not quick, and it’s not always straightforward, but it is possible. The scars might not disappear completely, but the skills you learn in therapy can help make sure the hurt doesn’t control your relationship. These scars can even become signs of how strong you’ve become together—proof that you can face tough times and come out stronger.

           Emotional Focused Therapy for Couples

Do you feel like you and your partner are drifting apart? It's normal for couples to go through tough times. Maybe you're arguing more, or it feels like you're not being heard like before. These challenges are tough, but they don't have to define your relationship.

I'm Sherriden Brown, a Registered Psychotherapist who specializes in helping couples. Today, I want to share something that has brought many couples back together: Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT. This approach isn't about quick fixes. It's about understanding the deep feelings that shape your relationship.

EFT is based on attachment theory. This means it helps you and your partner see and strengthen the emotional ties that keep you together. It focuses on building empathy and understanding, paving the way to a secure and resilient relationship.

If you're feeling stuck and unsure how to move forward, you're not alone. Many couples face these challenges. EFT offers powerful tools not just to manage conflicts but to turn them into chances to grow closer.

Let’s discover how Emotionally Focused Therapy can give you the tools to solidify your relationship’s foundation, helping it not just survive but thrive. Together, we can aim for those moments of deep connection and joy that every couple deserves.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?

Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, may sound a bit formal, but it’s really based on a straightforward idea: building a strong emotional bond between you and your partner. It’s about understanding the importance of your connection—similar to the way children feel connected to their parents.

EFT involves three main steps. First, we focus on de-escalation. This is where you learn to calm down the conflicts that can shake up your relationship. Next, we move to restructuring. In this stage, you and your partner practice new ways to share and respond to each other’s deeper emotions and needs. The final step is consolidation, where we make sure these new, positive patterns stick, giving your relationship a strong, emotional base.

The main goal is simple—to make your relationship a safe place where you both feel free to be yourselves and truly connected. We’ll walk through these steps together, dealing with the emotions that come up, understanding them, and using them to strengthen your bond.

EFT digs deep, addressing not just the surface issues like arguments, but the deeper emotional needs that aren’t being met. This approach helps you and your partner create a durable and loving connection.

           Benefits of EFT Couples Therapy

EFT is more than just a way to stop the arguments—it helps you really understand what’s going on beneath the surface. Imagine it like learning a new language, but instead of words, you're using feelings to communicate. This deeper understanding can really change how you connect.

Here’s how EFT can help you and your partner:

Understanding Emotions:

You’ll get better at noticing not just your feelings, but also seeing why your partner acts the way they do. This is key for building empathy. It’s about feeling with your partner, not just feeling sorry for them.

Fewer Fights:

When you understand each other better, you’re less likely to get upset over the little things. And when bigger issues do come up, you’ll handle them together. This makes everything a bit smoother.

Closer Connection:

Understanding each other’s true feelings can bring you closer together. It's not just about reacting to what's on the outside, but connecting with the real emotions underneath.

Improved Daily Interactions:

Even simple things like how you say hello or talk about your day can become more caring. These moments build up, strengthening your relationship day by day.

EFT is much more than a way to fix problems, it's about building a future together. This therapy helps lay a strong foundation for your relationship, empowering you to not only survive together, but also grows stronger and deeper with each passing day.

How Does EFT Relate to Interpersonal Therapy?

It's useful to understand how Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) aligns with and differs from Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), as both aim to improve your relationships.

           Similarities:

           Goal of Enhancing Relationships:

Both EFT and IPT are designed to help you improve how you relate to your partner or spouse.

           Focus on Communication:

Each therapy emphasizes the importance of effective communication in resolving conflicts and building a stronger relationship.

           Differences:

Emotional Depth:

EFT dives deep into the emotional bonds and attachment aspects of your relationship, aiming to strengthen emotional understanding and expression. In contrast, IPT tends to focus more on social roles and interpersonal interactions, addressing how these affect your relationships.

Theoretical Foundation:

EFT is grounded in attachment theory, which highlights the need for secure, emotionally connected relationships. IPT, while also valuing secure connections, does not centre its approach around attachment theory.

Approach to Emotions:

EFT specifically works on enhancing emotional awareness and helping partners express their deeper emotions constructively. IPT, meanwhile, focuses on improving interpersonal skills and adapting behavior to better manage social roles and expectations.

By understanding these similarities and differences, you can better appreciate why EFT might be the right choice if deepening your emotional connection with your partner is a priority. It's tailored to not just resolve conflicts but to fundamentally enhance the emotional bonds that hold your relationship together.

           EFT Couples Therapy in Practice

So, how does EFT play out in real life? It’s not just theory; it's a practical approach that brings real changes to your relationship. Here's what you can expect when you and your partner engage in EFT couples therapy.

           Key Components:

Role of the Therapist:

In EFT, I act as a guide to help you navigate through your emotions and interactions. My job is to create a safe space where you both can explore your feelings without fear of judgment. This environment is crucial for honest communication.

Active Participation:

If you think you "don't do emotions" or learned that showing emotion is a sign of weakness, you may feel uncomfortable with the idea of couples counseling. But I have a lot of experience helping people like you find success. To make progress, both you and your partner need to be involved in therapy. This means opening up about your feelings, listening to each other, and being willing to try new ways of connecting. Even if expressing your needs feels challenging, I'll guide you to a place where it becomes more comfortable.

Commitment to the Process:

Successful therapy requires a commitment from both partners. You’ll need to dedicate time and effort to attend sessions and apply what you learn outside of therapy.

           Stronger Emotional Bonds:

EFT helps you understand and connect with your partner’s deepest emotional needs, reinforcing the bond between you. By focusing on emotional awareness, EFT teaches you both to communicate in ways that build rather than break your connection.

With better understanding comes fewer conflicts, as you’re able to approach disagreements with empathy and insight.
